This is a farm-name near Llanmadog, Gower, south Wales. The earliest forms are Lagadranta and Little Lagadranta (1801). The land is low, poor soil, near the sea shore. Is it possibly Irish/Gaelic? poss. consisting of lag & cadranta = poor low land. Are there similar names in Ireland? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Deric J. IP: Logged |

If I had heard of it and were to go on first phonetic impressions I would have said it is the hollow of blackthorns Lag being a hollow and Dranta a variant of Drean but there are other phonetic words like Dranna a quarrel or battle and the we have Drantan, snarling or growling. The word dranta does not exist in Irish placenames. Regards. Tom. IP: Logged |

Thanks Tom. I will bear 'lag' and 'dranta' in mind. I would have expected a Welsh Pant-y-draen in this locality. I can't establish an Irish connection with the property. Its a puzzle. Buiochas Tom, Deric. IP: Logged |
