I am working on a project to properly name all the GAA clubs in Galway.Below is my request. Looking for any help people out there can give me. Some club secretaries havent come back so I am putting this out in the public domain in order to speed up the process. As part of our GAA 125th Year celebrations, the GAA are erecting a Club Wall outside the entrance to the GAA Museum in Croke Park. Details available www.gaa.ie/files//club/nuachtlitir-chlubanna-bealtaine-2009.doc www.gaa.ie/files//club/nuachtlitir_chlubanna_meitheamh_2009.doc The Club Wall in Croke Park will be printed later this week. Each clubs crest and club name will be printed as what appears here and on the picture that I have loaded on flickr unless I specify the corrections in the next few days. Please check first of all that your club is included. Here is where they are http://www.flickr.com/photos/21848127@N04/sets/72157622603257173/ We have gone through the names of all the clubs and come up with the attached list according to the names commission. While this is this the only legal name for the place names in question we will still have to take the local preference for the name, particularly for the English version. We use the following site as a reference for name http://www.logainm.ie/?uiLang=en
PLEASE go through the list and reply to me immediately. I haven't checked all the Irish versions yet and have only glanced at the crests as I am in bed with the flu. If every club goes through its own name and crest we can resolve this tomorrow which is what we have to do. 1. There is a hyphen in Oranmore-Maree. Reason for this is that it was the coming together of two clubs in the one parish. 2. No English version of Cárna-Caiseal. Gaeltacht club who only use the Gaelic version. 4. No English version of Oileáin Árann. Take out the Aran Islands. The club is simply Oileáin Árann. Gaeltacht club who only use the Gaelic version. 5. Ballygar St. Brendan's should be St Brendan's, Newbridge-Ballygar (Naomh Brendain, An Droichead Nua-Béal Átha Ghártha). Note the hyphen as its the coming together of two clubs in the one parish. If the Irish version is too long leave it as Naomh Brendain as the Newbridge-Ballygar reference is on the English version. Note also that all names with St should not have a full stop after the St. (Exception is here as its the end of the sentence) 6. Crest for Ballinasloe is wrong. No longer called St Grellan's. The club is now Ballinasloe GAA. 7. No English version of An Cheathrú Rua. No Carraroe. Gaeltacht club who only use the Gaelic version. 8. Incorrect spelling of An Chealtrach. Caltra in Irish. 9. St Mary's, Athenry Naomh Mhuire, Baile Átha an Rí. Comma and no full stop. (Baile) 10. Baile Chláir does not have the Gaillimhe in it. 11. Ahascragh/Fohenagh has a Slash. Its an amalgamation. 12. No English version of Bearna-Na Forbacha. Gaeltacht club who only use the Gaelic version. 13. No English version of Chaisleáin Ghearr. Gaeltacht club who only use the Gaelic version. 14. Ballinasloe Camogie to be removed. 15. Two Hyphens -- in Oughterard -- Seamus Ó'Maille (Uachtar Árd -- Seamus Ó Maille) 16. One Hypen - in Salthill-Knocknacarra (Bóthar na Trá-Cnoc na Cathrach) 17. No full stop on St Kerrill's (Naomh Coireall) Also second l in Naomh Coireall. 18. No English version of An Spidéal. Gaeltacht club who only use the Gaelic version 19. There is no fada on the i in St Michael's (Naomh Michéal) 20. No apostrophe s on St Thomas' (Naomh Thomáis) Spelling of Thomais 21. No English version in Naomh Pádraig, An Fhairche 22. No full stop in St Coleman's 23. Tynagh/Abbey-Duniry has a hyphen and a slash. Need to Check Irish version. 24. Clifden is Naomh Feichín, An Clochán (Naomh Feichín, Clifden). 25. An Saighleán should have no i. Crest has it but version on names commission hasnt. Also there is no such place as Sylane on names commission. Its Sylaun. Need club to check this and go with local preference. 26. Killanin is another with no such place name. The correct version is Cill Aithnín (Killanin). 27. Moycullen have to decide if they want the English version left in. Are they a Gaeltacht club who only use the Gaelic version. 28. Tuam Stars wrong crest. Correct one was attached to the original email. 29. Do St Columba's want the reference to Renmore/Mervue left in or removed. 30. Sarsfields wrong crest. Cork Sarsfields. 31. Tommy Larkins no apostrophe. 32. Rahoon-Newcastle wrong crest. Should have a Hyphen in name. 33. No English version for Na Piarsaigh, Ros Muc. Gaeltacht club who only use the Gaelic version 34. Crest is wrong for Loughrea. http://www.loughreahurling.com/ 35. Naomh Gaibriéil, Cill Chonaill (St. Gabriel's, Kilconnell) is the correct name for St. Gabriel`s, Kilconnell 36. Is the St James Crest correct? 37. Meelick-Eyrecourt Hyphen in name and Crest looks like Meelick from Clare. 38. No English version in Version Naomh Anna, Leitir Moir. Gaeltacht club who only use the Gaelic version 39. Ballinderren spelt wrong. Should have a double r in derren. 40. Fr. Griffins/Eire Og is the name of what is in as Fr. Griffins 41. Killimor is the camogie crest. 42. Ard Raithin -- Naomh Muire (Ardrahan -- Naomh Muire) is the correct name 43. Kilnadeema/Leitrim has a slash. Its an amalgamation of two clubs. Cheers and feel free to send back comments etc.
