Hi,my 5xgreatgrandmother Mary Maxwell nee
Ralph, was born in Ireland around 1824 to 1830, depending on which census you read.My
nana has been trying for years to find out where in Ireland Thomas Maxwell+Mary Ralph
originate from so she can go further back in the familytree. The only clue we have is on the 1871 census for Darlington, County Durham, where it states place of birth, Cashbar, Ireland.Only trouble is the place doesn't seem to exist. My thoughts are
that the guy filling in the forms may have misunderstood her,so i have tried to find names that sound similar.I could only find Crossgar and Cashla. So if anyone out there
could help i would be very grateful.
Cheers Dan.

Dan,

My first thought was Castlebar, in Co. Mayo. I'll do some more browsing and see if I can "create" any other options.

Dan,

Well......that's wasn't very long [gr]. I really don't think I'll find any other place which might fit. The more I thought about it, the better Castlebar might be. I think that someone hearing the "bar" would be unlikely to change that sound very much when transcribing it. Whereas the "sh" in Cash could sound quite different, depending on the speaker/listener. The main concern I have with my idea, is the additional syllable. Of course, is the middle syllable, the "le" is - shall we say - 'swallowed', it would disappear completely. I'm trying to recollect how Mayo speakers say "Castlebar", but nothing out of the ordinary comes to me.

I expect Tom will chip in, in the morning, after he's had a good night's rest.

Hi Pete,
I'm from Castlebar Co Mayo and we have a large family of Ralph's here, I'm in the process of doing my own family tree so feel free to contact me. I've only gone back as far as 1842.

Raymond, not sure whether you are a Ralph from your response. My great great grandfather Anthony Ralph was soldier in the 63rd Foot. Records show that he was born in Castlebar probably around 1808. After enlistment he served in Australia and India, marrying another soldier's(John Reilly) daughter in 1837.Both families came to New Zealand in 1849 after army service.Anthony and family settled in Huntly south of Auckland in 1865.Many of the family still live in the area.

It is long time back but possibly someone in your area can throw a little light on the connection to Castlebar.
