The forum is really slow these days, so I thought I'd throw-out a simple question which has bothered me for years......but never sufficiently to ask anyone about it.

Why are the larger Irish rivers identified as River XXXXX, such as River Boyne, River Shannon, River Barrow......... while the lesser rivers are identified with the form XXXXX River, such Oweniny River, Mulkear River, Awbeg River? I'm sure someone out there must have wondered about this - and discovered the answer !!!
