I recently received a request from a fellow for information on a place called "Atcula". He is trying to connect the Kilkenny Gall-Burkes with the Kilkenny/Tipperary Burkes (probably through one of the Clanwilliam baronies) and wonders if the phrase "the same from the race of David gallda, according as the lands of Atcula go" might give him a clue. This is from a document "The Triumphs of Turlough Vol. II", probably about 1580, which lists the groundrents for tenants of the Baron of Castleconnell, who heads the Clanwilliam Burkes. I have done about all I can on this. Based upon what little I can glean from this document (he sent me a file), Atcula (if it is a place, and not the owner of the land) would probably be in Limerick Clanwilliam boundary. Any advice greatly appreciated [gr].........I'm way over my head on this. ------------------ IP: Logged |

Hello Pete. If you have a look in my book ou will see that I never found this placename in any of the old references available to me. Now you know from looking at the old maps that if it was a placename it might appear as something complete different today or even be spelled phonetically. Possibilities are at, áth a ford,Culla, chodla, sleep. Culla, Cholla, not given. Culla, coille, a wood. Cula, cúla, a back. You have your work cut out for yourself on this one. There is nothing close to it in Kilkenny today. Sorry I could not be more helpful.Best of luck. Regards. Tom. IP: Logged |

Tom.......your book was one of my first sources, but I didn't see anything resembling Atcula in it. I'll just sit on it for awhile and, perhaps, I'll get some ideas [hah!]. Pete ------------------ IP: Logged |

Pete. If I was to allow my mind to wander I would surmise that it might have been something like atticula, atti being the site or location of the house of... You know how I hate to speculate but in this case I could not resist. Regards. Tom. IP: Logged |

Tom, The "atti" thing is interesting, as the original genealogy work on the Kilkenny Gall-Burkes was done by the estimable John O'Donovan, who was a descendant of these Burkes. J.O'D. was born in Atateemore, Co. Kilkenny, near the presumed settlement area of this family. I once looked-up in your book for the meaning of Atatee - and, of course, it's there. I wonder if O'Donovan ever wondered about the possibility of Atti for the beginning of Atcula? We'll probably never know. ------------------ IP: Logged |
