I've been doing a lot of reading about Edmund Spenser in Ireland and I got to wondering what an arch-Protestant like Spenser would have thought about living in a castle named for St. Colman. Then I started wondering about how many other places named for saints were within, say, a 15 mile radius of Kilcolman and also Spenser's other property of New Abbey at Kilcullen. Unfortunately, I don't have good early modern maps. Any thoughts out there? And thanks. IP: Logged |

There were lots of places named after St Colman. This is a job for Pete, he has the best collection of Maps and Irish reference books outside the Irish State. Pete this sounds like its right up your alley. Regards. Tom. IP: Logged |

Alison, I'm not sure that this is a reasonable request, as presented. Within a circle of 15 miles radius from Kilcolman Castle, there are over 1000 townlands in Co. Cork, and 200 or so in Co. Limerick. Not only do many townland names include a reference to a Saint, but there are also many buildings - abbeys, castles, etc. - which could have such references. And also non-townland placenames, such as villages. New Abbey is only slightly simpler, as the average townland size in that area seems to be a bit larger. Nevertheless, there are between 800 and 1000 townlands in a 15 miles radius from there - in the counties of Kildare, Wicklow, Laois and Offaly. It might be an interesting subject for a book, but I don't want to spend the many hours required to properly research the question. Sorry. ------------------ IP: Logged |

Ah, I didn't realize the scale of the question. My apologies. But you've tacitly answered my underlying question which was to what degree buying an estate in 16th c Ireland would have brought with it an intense awareness of local Irish saints, whether one liked it or not. So thanks. IP: Logged |
