Hi, I found out that Muckanaghederdauhaulia is the longest placename in Ireland but I'm having trouble figuring out what it means. I've gotten as far as 'place of the pigs' but can't make sense of the rest. Can anybody help? IP: Logged |

It's okay, I've just come across it and found out that it means 'pig marsh between two seas' as its a stretch of land jutting into the sea in Connemara. IP: Logged |

First rule with Irish placenames; assume nothing. Muckanaghederdavhalia, muiceannach-eder-dau-haile, piggery between two briny inlets. It is not necessarily the longest placename in Ireland though. I have seen it also spelled; Muckanaghederdauhaulia, with the Irish version of muicenach-idir-dhá-shaile. Regards. Tom. IP: Logged |

I'm completely out of my element on this, but thought I'd enter what Tim Robinson, in his Gazetteer of Connemara says. He gives the same Irish spelling of the name as you have, Tom, but his interpretation seems a bit different: rounded hill between two seas (muicineach / pig-shaped; sáile / salt water). That's the only thing I can contribute, other than knowing just where it's located [gr]. ------------------ IP: Logged |
