I should like to find out whether the name of the ancient (pre-Goidelic?) Irish people 'Erainn' could be the root of the name 'Arran', on the analogy of [Cenel] Loairn > 'Lorn', or [Cenel] Gabhrain > 'Gowrie' etc. Would this change be feasible in view of the long-term phonological development from Old Irish? NB The name 'Arran' does not seem to be connected with single-'r' 'Aran', the archipelago off s.-w. Ireland -- but I am willing to be convinced. NNB I am not a Gaelic scholar. There appears to be an Irish barony (17th century?) called 'Arra'. Does anybody know of a connection, if any? Thorbjoern Campbell ------------------ IP: Logged |

Arran , also known as Aran, Ardhan (in Parthian), Al-Ran (in Arabic), Aghvank and Alvank (in Armenian), Ran-i (in Georgian) or Caucasian Albania ... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arran IP: Logged |

Sorry guys, I have no information on Scottish placenames. Aran as in Aran Island means that it is kidney shaped, i.e. an arched back with ridges Regards. Tom. [This message has been edited by enfield (edited 03 May 2009).] IP: Logged |
