This was the town in Ireland my great grandmother said she came from when she went to the states. I'm interested in hearing whatever you know about it -- the meaning of the name, where it is (I heard there may be two towns by this name, one in Co. Derry and one in Co. Tyrone), etc. Thanks for your help. IP: Logged |

Without access to the original Irish I can only assmue that it is Cul-Na- cruach. CUl.....is Hill back or an angle. Na.......of the. Cruach...... is a rick or stack such as of corn or hay and is genearally applied to hills especially those with a round, stacked, or piled up high apppearance. Tom IP: Logged |

Culnagrew is possibly Cúl na gcró meaning Corner or 'hill-back' of the 'crews' or pigsties. The word 'pig-crew' is still used locally. IP: Logged |

I'm from Culnagrew in Swatragh Co. Derry and would be interested in hearing who your relation is. Maybe we're related. ------------------ IP: Logged |

My ancestor there was Bridget Matthews -- she went to the U.S. in 1909 to live with her older brother, Hugh. She also had two other sisters, Rose and Kate. IP: Logged |
